Wataru is a townie in Starlet Town. He is a retired boat captain. He doesn't go out much from his residence, the lighthouse. He usually goes out only to take care of his garden and visit the Beach Shack. He is an old friend of Suki and Alice's dad.

He does not have the best relationship with his son, Wakuu. Although Wakuu now lives in the observatory, he always makes sure to visit his father on the weekends. Wataru is a strict parent who is not very good at communication. He is set in his ways and is very hard to convince of opinions other than his own, something Wakuu struggles with frequently. Wataru raised his son as a single parent. Wakuu was born out of a one-night stand and his mother is not around.
Wataru is reserved and willful. Hard-headed and stern, he likes his own space and has the tendency to be a hermit. He does not talk about his feelings because he does not think talking about them helps with anything. He is focused when it comes to goals, and takes pride in what he does. He can often be stubborn and judgmental, and has a tendency for blaming himself for things when they go wrong.

Giving gifts to Wataru will raise the friendship level, and you can do it twice a week. Wataru will give special dialogues if you give gifts on his birthdays:

Player enters the Beach Shack. Sunny is working behind the counter. Player encounters Wataru and Wakuu arguing about going to yoga. Wataru doesn’t want to go. Player convinces him to try it, saying they’ll go too.

Wakuu, Player, and Wataru arrive at yoga. Leah is at the head of the group. Wataru isn’t flexible and isn’t enjoying himself. He does something embarrassing and leaves thinking everyone is laughing at him. Everyone else at yoga is younger, from Wakuu’s friend group.

Wataru comes to Player’s farm to ask for gardening tips. They talk about the catastrophic yoga class and Wataru reveals that he’s lonely and misses his crew from the Pithy Mermaid.
